According to Miri District police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, Niek was at the departure hall waiting to return to Singapore, where he worked as a cook.

Witnesses claim that Niek was on the massage chair for an hour before an immigration officer found him unconscious

The officer then alerted his supervisor, Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB), and Medic Airport personnel about the situation.

“Initial investigations found that the victim was lying in front of a massage chair in the departure hall and was given breathing aid by the airport medic," said ACP Lim as reported by Borneo Post.

“Hospital personnel also arrived at the scene and provided emergency respiratory assistance or CPR,” he added.
