What looked like an ordinary factory in a bustling business park in Shah Alam was actually a massive drug-processing laboratory
In a police raid on 15 August, the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) shut down a syndicate's drug operation.
Dubbed Op Eumenes, authorities confiscated over 13 tonnes of drugs, largely liquid and powdered MDMA.
The stash is estimated to be worth a staggering RM2.4 billion, making it the largest seizure in NCID history.
The syndicate allegedly used industrial premises around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to process and store the illicit substances
"What appeared from the outside to be an ordinary industrial operation was actually being used to process and produce drugs on a large scale," said NCID director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, according to the New Straits Times.
Hussein explained that the syndicate deliberately chose suitable industrial areas to process and store the drugs discreetly.
Five suspects, aged between 29 and 43, were arrested during six simultaneous raids
The group consisted of three local men, alongside a foreign man and a foreign woman. They were charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on 21 and 27 August.
Police confiscated 7.09 tonnes of liquid MDMA and 6.06 tonnes of MDMA powder, along with 1.04kg of cannabis, 880g of Erimin 5 pills, 180g of ketamine, 150g of yaba pills, and 50g of methamphetamine. Preliminary urine tests revealed three suspects tested positive for various drugs.
The syndicate, active since February, sourced its precursor chemicals and processing machinery directly from China. Authorities also seized assets worth RM276,000, including five vehicles.
