A passenger who thought she had lost her sentimental ring for good was pleasantly surprised when Singapore Airlines (SIA) cabin crew went the extra mile to retrieve it using a DIY tool made from items found onboard the aircraft
Cassandra Tan, 32, was travelling on Singapore Airlines flight SQ912 from Singapore to Manila on 13 July when the incident happened.
Speaking to SAYS, the marketing professional said she had briefly removed her ring while applying hand sanitiser and placed it on the tray table.
However, when she tried to put it back on, the ring slipped and fell into a narrow gap beside her seat.
The ring, which cost around SGD250 (approximately RM780), held sentimental value as Cassandra bought it during her first trip to China
"At the time, I had already accepted that it might not be possible to retrieve it and that I may eventually have to replace it," she said.
After informing the cabin crew, Cassandra said they were "incredibly patient and kind" throughout the situation.
A crew member first tried using a chopstick to reach the ring, and Cassandra managed to hook it briefly before it slipped away and rolled deeper into the seat gap.
The crew then informed her that the ground team had been notified and that engineers could assist after landing
Cassandra was prepared to wait behind after disembarkation for help.
However, after completing their meal service and once their duties allowed, another crew member offered to take another look.
In a now-viral video, Cassandra shared how the crew improvised a retrieval tool using two chopsticks stuck together with a plaster, along with a bobby pin turned into a small hook
The crew member then spent around 10 minutes lying on the floor and carefully manoeuvring the DIY tool to retrieve the ring.
The effort paid off when the ring was finally recovered.
"I thanked the crew profusely and immediately submitted a formal compliment through Singapore Airlines' website," Cassandra told SAYS.
She also obtained the names of the crew members onboard so she could personally recognise those who helped her.
In her video caption, Cassandra praised the crew's dedication, saying she was "so incredibly impressed" by their effort
"Was supposed to wait for the engineers to come on board after landing but the crew was so invested in getting the ring out because 'We want you to disembark smoothly and without any delays'," she wrote.
The clip has since caught attention online, with viewers amused by the crew's resourceful solution using everyday items found on the plane.
