Singaporean police have arrested a 17-year-old Singaporean after he falsely claimed that his travel companions were carrying a bomb and an e-cigarette at Woodlands Checkpoint
The incident occurred on 14 August at the busy land border crossing used by commuters travelling between Malaysia and Singapore, according to The Straits Times.
The teenager had just cleared immigration at the Arrival Bus Hall when he allegedly pointed to his two companions and loudly claimed that they possessed the illegal items
An Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer conducting routine profiling duties nearby overheard the comments and immediately intervened.
The officer stopped all three travellers and referred them for comprehensive security checks, which found that neither a bomb nor a vaporiser was in their possession.
Follow-up checks led to the teenager being handed over to police at around 10.45pm
Officers subsequently arrested him for public nuisance, and investigations are ongoing.
In a statement released on social media on 18 August, the ICA emphasised that security at Singapore's land, sea, and air checkpoints remains a top priority.
The authority warned that it takes all security threats and reports of contraband seriously and will not hesitate to act against individuals who make false claims that cause public alarm.
Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints connect Singapore to Johor, handling hundreds of thousands of cross-border commuters daily
Authorities reminded all travellers using the checkpoints to observe safety regulations, behave in an orderly manner, and comply fully with officers' instructions at all times.
