A bridge that was part of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) construction collapsed yesterday, 3 March

According to The Star, the Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call on the incident at around 5.58pm.

23 firemen, three fire engines, and two emergency rescue service vehicles from Jalan Hang Tuah, Tun Razak, and Cheras Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene.

The rubble fell over a van and trapped at least five people inside it

According to Malaysiakini, the authorities took roughly three hours to extract all five victims from the van.

Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya told the media that two women in their 40s died at the scene.

"The driver, a male, survived. Two women also survived and were sent to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre. Two victims died at the scene and will be taken to the hospital for an autopsy."

Yesterday, Zulkefly told The Star that the driver will be detained to assist in investigations. He also noted that the trailer was carrying metal items and was not overloaded at the time of the accident.

"Perhaps the collision was due to technical reasons. It had its own escort vehicles that went ahead of it. How the collision occurred exactly is still under investigation."

Today, police found that the driver tested positive for methamphetamine. Astro Awani reported that the driver has been identified as a 40-year-old from Perak and he escaped with no injuries.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
