Yesterday, on 12 May 2014, several roads in KL were temporarily closed due to the flash flood that occurred at about 3.20pm

A city traffic police spokesman said the flash flood started when the heavy rain started earlier this evening. “We had to close a few roads due to the high water level to avoid any mishap,” he said. He said as of 4.30pm, only Jalan Chan Sow Lin heading to Seremban were still closed while waiting for the water to subside.

Strong winds also toppled trees in several parts of the city, worsening the already chaotic traffic.

The Jalan Duta-Jalan Semantan interchange was one of the worst-affected stretches by yesterday’s 3pm downpour, with cars caught in a bumper-to-bumper crawl. A car was found stalled in the fast rising waters along the slip road to Jalan Duta from Jalan Semantan heading towards Jalan Kuching.

StarMetro reader Goh Bok Yen was caught in the chaos while travelling along Jalan Duta near the MRT construction sites. “There was muddy water everywhere. I had to abandon my plan of turning onto Jalan Semantan when I saw how high the water had risen,” he said.

A Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police spokesman said the floodwaters began to recede from about 5.15 pm, and the affected stretches of Jalan Duta and Jalan Sultan Ismail and the Cheras roundabout were reopened to traffic. The floodwaters were also receding in the other places, such as Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Dataran Maybank and in front of the Jalan Travers police station, he told Bernama.
