Signature Turns Kechara Soup Kitchen Centre Into 2-In-1 Food Hub & Community Empowerment Centre

Signature International Berhad has teamed up with Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) to give its Jalan Imbi centre a major makeover, turning it into a 2-in-1 Dual Food Distribution Kitchen & Empowerment Centre

The new facility is designed to do two jobs under one roof, helping KSK prepare and distribute meals to underserved communities while also providing a space for programmes that teach practical skills and help beneficiaries work towards greater independence.

The project is being carried out through Signature Cares, Signature's long-term corporate responsibility initiative.

For more than 30 years, Signature has been focused on creating functional living spaces through its design, manufacturing, installation, and project management expertise

For this project, the company decided to put those same skills to use outside the home.

Working closely with KSK, Signature redesigned the Jalan Imbi centre around the organisation's day-to-day needs, while making sure the space could also accommodate future community empowerment programmes.

KSK's Jalan Imbi centre has been one of its key community hubs for nearly two decades, providing meals, welfare assistance, and support to individuals and families experiencing hardship.

But as KSK's outreach grew, the organisation needed a facility that could do more than just distribute food.

With the 2-in-1 concept, the space will now serve two purposes

During daily operations, the purpose-built kitchen will be used to prepare and distribute meals to underserved communities.

Once meal services are over, the same space can be transformed into an empowerment centre for cooking, baking, and other skills development programmes.

The idea is to make better use of the same facility throughout the day, allowing KSK to continue meeting immediate food needs while also creating opportunities for beneficiaries to learn practical skills, build confidence, and work towards long-term self-reliance.

Signature completely redesigned and upgraded the centre to improve its workflow and functionality, while also making the space more comfortable and practical for KSK's volunteers, staff, and beneficiaries.

For Signature Group CEO Lau Kock Sang, the partnership was less about simply making a donation and more about figuring out how the company could contribute in a way that would have a lasting impact.

"When we first visited Kechara Soup Kitchen's Jalan Imbi centre, we saw an organisation that had been serving vulnerable Malaysians with unwavering dedication over 20 years. The question before us was never whether we should help, but how we could contribute in the most meaningful way using the expertise we have built over more than three decades," explained Lau.

"That belief sits at the heart of Signature Cares. Every business has capabilities that extend beyond its products or services. When those capabilities are applied to genuine community needs, they can create lasting value that goes far beyond a single project," he added.

KSK General Manager Justin Cheah Kok Leong said the revamped centre is an important milestone for the organisation as it continues supporting vulnerable communities.

The collaboration marks the beginning of a longer-term partnership between Signature and Kechara Soup Kitchen, with both organisations exploring future volunteer initiatives, community engagement activities, and empowerment programmes under Signature Cares.
