UMNO Says MACC Has Summoned Zahid To Be Arrested On Thursday
The former deputy prime minister is expected to be charged on Friday.
According to UMNO supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be arrested tomorrow by as he has been summoned to appear at the MACC headquarters tomorrow
Lokman was quoted by several media houses saying that the UMNO president received the notice at 1.45pm today, asking to present himself to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters tomorrow afternoon.
"He is to present himself at 3pm tomorrow and expected to be charged the following day on Friday," Lokman said in a statement today, 17 October.
MACC has been looking into alleged misappropriation of funds from Zahid's family-owned welfare foundation Yayasan Akal Budi
Zahid, who is being investigated for alleged graft linked to the family-run charitable foundation, which he chairs, was grilled by the MACC last week for three consecutive days, for several hours each day, reported The Malaysian Insight.
In their investigation, MACC is looking into allegations that RM800,000 of the foundation's funds was used to pay Zahid and his wife's credit card bills.
However, Zahid claims that the payments by the charity for the credit card bills were "made in error by an aide", which he has since resolved by settling the bill.
There is, however, no official statement from the anti-graft authorities regarding the speculation about Zahid's arrest
Meanwhile, Lokman has urged UMNO members to galvanise at the MACC headquarters tomorrow in solidarity with their president
"Don’t leave our president alone. Come and defend Umno’s dignity which the current government is trying to tarnish," The Malaysian Insight quoted Lokman as saying, who added that members had nothing to fear as a peaceful gathering is not an offence.
