A 65-year-old man who had been living in darkness for four years can finally see again, thanks to a businessman who stepped in to help him undergo cataract surgery
Mohd Din Deli, who lives alone in Kuala Lumpur, lost his sight after developing advanced cataracts in both eyes. Unable to see, he was forced to give up his job as a security guard and began relying on the kindness of strangers to get by.
"This walking stick became my eyes because I could no longer see where I was going," he told Bernama.
Din, who is divorced and has lost contact with his two children, rents a small room at a budget hotel near Pudu Sentral for RM30 a day. He would spend his days seeking help from members of the public around the city.
"I would begin my day about 5.30am and stay on the streets until evening. Some people gave me food, while others offered small amounts of money. Some days, I would not even receive a single sen," he said.
Din's circumstances began to change after he met businessman Datuk Seri Jeyenderan Ramasamy, who frequently passed by the Kortumalai Pillaiyar Temple along Jalan Pudu Lama
Jeyenderan would often stop to help Din cross the road and sometimes give him money for his daily needs.
"I recognised him only by his voice because I could not see his face. It was only later that I learned he was the owner of a shipping company. His acts of kindness meant so much to me," Din said.
Din had previously gone for an eye examination, hoping there was still a chance for him to regain his sight. He was told that cataract surgery would cost RM1,800, an amount he could not afford.
However, after learning about Din's condition, Jeyenderan stepped in and arranged for him to undergo the surgery.
On 4 August, Din opened his eyes and saw the world again after four years.
However, the businessman's kindness did not stop there. He also offered Din a job as a security guard at his company, giving him an opportunity to rebuild his life.
"I was shocked to receive the job offer and overwhelmed with gratitude. I will always be thankful for his compassion and sincere help during the darkest period of my life," Din said.
Jeyenderan told Bernama that he was moved by Din's circumstances and simply wanted to lend him a helping hand.
He said he was particularly saddened by the fact that Din had to depend on others to hold his hand and accompany him to the mosque for Friday prayers.
"Today, he can walk to the mosque on his own and perform his prayers," Jeyenderan said.
