OpenAI CEO Calls Singapore A Leader In AI As Company Opens Office In The Lion City
This is OpenAI's second office in Asia, following the launch of its Tokyo branch earlier this year.
OpenAI's chief executive officer, Sam Altman, has declared Singapore a leader in artificial intelligence (AI)
This comes as the San Francisco-based company prepares to open a new office in the city-state.
"Singapore, with its rich history of technology leadership, has emerged as a leader in AI," Altman said in a statement.
"We are excited to partner with the government and the country’s thriving AI ecosystem as we expand into the Asia-Pacific region."
OpenAI's decision to establish a presence in Singapore reflects the growing interest in AI across the region
Its new Singapore office is also seen as a commitment to meeting the growing demand for AI tools in the Asia-Pacific region.
Set to open by the end of the year, the Singapore office will act as a hub for OpenAI's operations, facilitating partnerships with local governments, businesses, and research organisations.
OpenAI is also partnering with AI Singapore, a state-backed initiative that brings together local research groups, further cementing its footprint in the region
Singaporeans are among the highest per-capita users of ChatGPT, the company's popular language model.
The move follows a period of rapid growth for OpenAI, which raised billions in funding earlier this year and reached a valuation of USD157 billion (RM672.71 billion). Key investors, including SoftBank Group Corp, have further strengthened the company's push into Asia.
This expansion follows the opening of OpenAI's first Asian office in Tokyo earlier in the year. The company introduced a tailored GPT-4 model designed specifically for Japanese-language users, showcasing its ability to customise AI offerings for local markets.
