Children who spend more time using digital devices during their developmental years may develop sharper cognitive processing skills by adolescence, according to an eight-year study conducted in Finland

Researchers involved in the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) project at the University of Jyväskylä tracked 260 teenagers with an average age of 15.8 years.

Based on the research titled Associations of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time From Childhood to Adolescence With Cognition in Adolescence: The PANIC Study, the team evaluated learning abilities, attention spans, and working memory performance, while simultaneously monitoring physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and digital device usage from early childhood through adolescence.

The findings indicate that higher overall screen exposure correlates with enhanced cognitive processing in teenagers

However, scientists cautioned that logging hours in front of a screen does not automatically make a child smarter.

Petri Jalanko, a doctoral researcher at the university, explained that the primary factor lies in how children engage with technology.

"Presumably, the essential point here is what kind of things they do in their screen time," Jalanko said, noting that parents and educators should actively encourage digital activities that demand active thinking, creative problem-solving, and continuous learning.

Rather than treating all device usage as inherently harmful, researchers advocate for establishing a healthy equilibrium between regular physical movement and mentally stimulating screen engagement

The study also highlighted complex differences in how physical exercise impacts cognitive growth across sexes.

Girls who engaged in higher levels of light-intensity physical activity showed improved working memory capacity. Conversely, boys who participated in structured, guided exercise routines demonstrated similar memory enhancements.

Unexpectedly, self-reported data revealed that lower levels of unsupervised exercise were associated with better cognitive processing skills

However, physical activity recorded through heart-rate monitors and movement sensors showed no clear statistical relationship with cognitive performance.

Jalanko emphasised that the links between physical movement, sedentary habits, and brain function remain highly intricate; results vary significantly based on gender, activity type, and measurement methods.

Because the research identified observational patterns rather than direct cause-and-effect relationships, academics noted that further clinical intervention studies are required before updating formal health guidelines.

So, what should parents do?

The answer isn't total removal of devices nor total freedom. It comes down to balance, making sure screen sessions engage the brain's heavy machinery rather than putting it to sleep. Encouraging the use of apps that force kids to build, calculate, or solve problems together makes all the difference.

Screens aren't the enemy; brainless passivity is. Give them space to think, challenge their mental processing, and let them develop their cognitive skills behind the screens.
