Sony Is Already Planning Development For The PS6 But We're Still Struggling To Find A PS5
How ah? :')
The Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) is only two years old as of November 2022, but Sony is already planning development for the PS6
According to PlayStation LifeStyle, a partially-redacted document revealed that Sony claims Microsoft offered to continue making Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027.
Following that, the report states "By the time Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around [redacted], it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness."
The year is redacted. But by puzzling the two pieces of information together, it is safe to assume that the PS6 will release sometime after 2027, which gives the PS5 a good seven-year lifespan as it released in 2020. Similar to the seven-year gap it took for the PS5 to come out after the PS4 released in 2013.
The document was also studied by Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry analyst, who suspects the new console could be coming out in 2028
Meanwhile, Malaysians are still struggling to get ahold of the PS5 :')
If you're a Malaysian, it's probably not an exaggeration to assume you've never even laid eyes on a physical version of the PS5 because it's always sold out.
In fact, even when Sony Store Malaysia opened it's latest online pre-orders for the console in November, it was sold out immediately.
There's also the looming semiconductor shortage happening globally
It is safe to say that the PS5 shortage is not only affecting Malaysians, as a global semiconductor shortage that impacted electronic manufacturers since 2020 have made the gaming console high in demand and low in supply, as reported by CNET.
Additionally, Yahoo! News stated that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger told Fox Business the shortage won't ease up until 2024, despite his prior prediction that it would end in 2023.
Guess we're all gonna have to wait a while. Hopefully before 2027, at least. :P
