Kicking off 2022 with a bang, IGN Southeast Asia is excited to bring you its first esports tournament of the year — a female-only Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) tournament known as Squad Up: Athena!
Squad Up made its debut in 2020 with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Squad Up 2020 tournament. Squad Up: Athena is a continuation of the esports tournament series, championing women gamers across Southeast Asia.
Created by IGN Southeast Asia in collaboration with Facebook Gaming, Squad Up: Athena is an open regional qualification tournament that will lead to an ALL-STAR invitational tournament
From a total of 24 teams, with 12 from the qualifier rounds and 12 being invited, only one team will be crowned as the champion.
The search for the best female MLBB gamers started in December 2021, with the open qualifier round that was held from 18 to 20 December 2021.
Teams from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines showcased amazing team playoffs to book themselves a spot in the nationals round, before the best was selected to battle in the regional final round.
On 21 December 2021, a follow up showmatch was streamed online by top Facebook Gaming creators across Southeast Asia. This event was also used to let eager viewers know which teams managed to qualify for the national tournament, as well as the invited teams for the finale.
The Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines tournament rounds of Squad Up: Athena will take place from 7 to 9 January 2022, while the finale will be on 15 January 2022
Winners from the nationals tournament will walk away with a RM21,000 cash prize each (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines), and the ultimate winner will take home a RM42,000 cash prize.
