Elon Musk's rebranded X, formerly Twitter, is shedding users at an alarming rate, and this trend isn't just a reaction to the US presidential election

While election day provided a fleeting spike in activity, the broader picture paints a grim reality for the platform's future.

X has long relied on high-profile events to drive engagement.

Historically, elections have delivered a surge in daily active users, and this year's results initially appeared no different.

However, fresh data reveals a different story: users are leaving X by the droves to avoid rampant misinformation and toxic discourse

According to the Guardian, citing data from SimilarWeb, X lost between 300,000 and 2.6 million daily users in the US in October alone, plummeting from 32.3 million to 29.6 million — a stark 8.4% decline.

What’s worse, analysts predict this downward spiral will persist into 2025.

Emarketer estimates a loss of seven million monthly active users in the US alone since Musk’s takeover in 2022.

X’s dwindling user base is mirrored by a sharp devaluation of its brand — now worth just USD673 million (RM2.99 billion), compared to USD5.7 billion (RM25.3 billion) pre-acquisition. Revenue has taken a hit too, down 40% year-over-year by mid-2024.

Meanwhile, rivals like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky are capitalising on the mass exodus

Threads, boasting over 100 million daily active users and 300 million monthly users, is rapidly evolving with features like curated feeds and search tools

Bluesky, while smaller at 25 million users, has gained traction as a refuge for those fleeing X's increasingly toxic environment.

Musk's vision for an "everything app" now faces an existential crisis. Without swift and meaningful changes, X risks becoming a relic of its former self — another cautionary tale in the tech world.
