4 Reasons Why You Need To Rethink Having A Garden Or Outdoor Wedding In Malaysia

Pretty Pinterest outdoor weddings are usually held in countries with low humidity.

While garden weddings may look picture-perfect on Instagram or Pinterest, the reality can be a bit more challenging, especially in Malaysia's tropical climate

If you're thinking of saying "I do" under the open sky, here are four things to consider before locking in your venue:

1. Unpredictable weather

Malaysian weather has no chill. One minute it's sunny, the next it's pouring rain.

Unless you're getting married somewhere cooler like Cameron Highlands, you and your guests are going to have to deal with the heat, the humidity, or both. And trust me, tents won't save you from feeling sticky.

Even in cooler venues like Cameron or Genting Highlands, Malaysia's high humidity makes everything feel damp compared to countries with lower humidity. (This can also affect your hair and makeup on your big day — just FYI!)

If you're someone who embraces spontaneity, a rainy wedding might still be a memorable experience. However, for others, the discomfort of extreme weather can take away from the celebration.

2. Bugs don't RSVP — but they show up anyway

Outdoors means you're sharing your special day with more than just your guests — think mosquitoes, ants, and other insects that may find their way into your ceremony or buffet spread.

No one wants to remember their wedding for swatting bugs, so it's important to factor this into your outdoor venue choice.

3. Heat and formal attire

The Malaysian heat can make wearing formal wedding attire quite uncomfortable. Grooms might feel like they've just run a marathon, and guests will likely be focused on staying cool rather than enjoying the ceremony.

And while your ceremony might be beautiful, it's hard to enjoy the moment when everyone's too hot to function.

3. Comfort for all guests

While a garden wedding may be beautiful, it might not be the most comfortable for all your loved ones, particularly older family members.

The heat, uneven ground, and lack of shade can make it challenging for some guests, especially those who aren't as mobile or comfortable in the sun for extended periods.

Comfort is key when creating lasting memories, and an indoor venue might be a better option to ensure everyone feels at ease.

4. The decor may not last

While garden weddings are often depicted as effortless on social media, reality can be different.

Flowers may wilt in the heat, tablecloths can stick to sweaty arms, and candles may be blown out by the breeze. What looks perfect in photos doesn't always hold up in the outdoor elements.

But here's the good news: Malaysia has plenty of gorgeous indoor venues that combine comfort and style

From air-conditioned ballrooms to boutique hotels or lush, garden-inspired spaces, you can get the aesthetic you want without the hassle of the outdoors.

And if you're set on the garden vibe, why not save it for a photoshoot with your partner? Pick a cooler day, and you'll still get those stunning outdoor shots without stressing over the weather.

At the end of the day, your wedding should be about celebrating your love. If an outdoor wedding is your dream, go for it — just make sure you plan ahead and keep your guests' comfort in mind.

And if you decide to stay indoors, trust me: your future self (and your sweat-free guests) will thank you.
