How To Apply For MyKad When Your Child Turns 12 Years Old
Parents should apply for their child's MyKad at JPN within 30 days of their 12th birthday. There will be a RM10 processing fee charged after that.
Malaysian children who turn 12 are required to register for their Malaysian identity card (IC), also known as MyKad
The process is pretty straightforward, and can be done at any National Registration Department (JPN) branch.
Registration for MyKad or IC is free for the first 30 days after your child turns 12. However, there will be a RM10 processing fee charged after that.
Here's what you need to know when applying for your child's MyKad at a JPN branch:
- Your child must be at least 12 years old, but under 16 years old
- A parent or guardian (grandfather, grandmother, aunt, uncle, or sibling over 21) must be present
- If the guardian is not in these categories, they must bring along a statutory declaration letter and a letter of confirmation from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) stating that they are responsible for the applicant's care
Before applying for your child's MyKad, make sure you prepare this list of required documents:
Your child's documents (Original)
- Birth Certificate or Adoption Certificate or Citizenship Certificate or confirmation of citizenship status or Citizenship Form or Appendix A (JAKOA)
- Passport if the applicant is a non-resident
Parent/guardian's documents (Original)
- Identity card
- Guardians with no family relationship must bring along a statutory declaration letter and confirmation letter from JKM confirming their role as the applicant's guardian
- Non-citizen parent/guardian must bring their passports from their country of origin
Other supporting documents (Original or certified copy)
- If your child's registered address is different from yours, you'll need to provide one of the following: electricity bill, water bill, sewerage bill, utility bill, property assessment tax, assessment tax, income tax's assessment form, sale and purchase agreement, tenancy agreement, a supporting document from a local authority like a Headman, Village Head, Longhouse Head (Tuai Rumah), State Assemblyman (ADUN), Member of Parliament (MP), employer, or the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), or other equivalent documents.
Here's a step-by-step process on how to apply for MyKad:
STEP 1: Take a number and obtain the application form JPN.KP01 from the JPN counter, then fill it out.
STEP 2: When your number is called, proceed to the counter with your completed form and supporting documents.
STEP 3: Digital thumbprints will be taken for both you and your child. A photograph for the MyKad or IC will also be taken on the spot.
According to JPN's website, you can collect your child's MyKad within five working days* for applications in Peninsular Malaysia or seven working days* for applications in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
*This timeframe applies to MyKad or IC applications by Malaysian citizens and to applications with no complications.
Can I apply for MyKad online?
Yes, JPN began allowing online MyKad applications in 2021.

STEP 1: Register for a MyGovernment account.
STEP 2: Log in to web12tahun.gov.my and go through the terms and conditions, then click 'Setuju'.
STEP 3: Fill in all the details, including the address, parent/guardian information, and the JPN branch where you want to pick up the MyKad or IC.
STEP 4: Print out the summary and bring it along with all the required documents to the selected JPN branch
Note: You'll still need to take a number at the JPN counter and wait like walk-in applicants. The only difference is that you won't have to fill out the JPN.KP01 form.
