How To Replace Your MyKad If The Chip Is Spoilt Or Card Is Damaged
JPN offers a phone-in service that allows you to apply for a replacement MyKad or IC without visiting a branch.
Is your MyKad or identity card (IC) damaged or spoilt? Fret not, we've got you covered.
Whether your MyKad has a crack, the lamination is peeling off, or the chip is faulty and not working any more, you can easily get a new MyKad at any National Registration (JPN) branch.
Those with an older MyKad or IC can also get it replaced with an upgraded chip that supports new applications developed for government agencies.
Here are two ways to replace a damaged MyKad or IC:
METHOD 1: Visit a JPN counter
Bring your original damaged MyKad or IC to any JPN branch to apply for a replacement.
If you fail to do so, JPN will charge you for losing your MyKad or IC, which may cost you up to RM1,000, woah! So, make sure to bring your original MyKad or IC along.
The process is fairly straightforward, and you should be able to receive your new MyKad or IC within the usual processing time:
- 30 minutes at selected branches
- Five working days* in Peninsular Malaysia
- Seven working days* in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan
This replacement service does not cover any changes to your particulars on your MyKad.
*This timeframe applies to MyKad or IC applications by Malaysian citizens and applications with no complications.
METHOD 2: Call JPN's hotline at 03-88808066
Many Malaysians may be unaware that JPN offers a phone-in service that allows you to apply for a replacement MyKad or IC without visiting a branch.
Known as MyPhone-In, this service has been available since 2022, according to an official JPN post on X.
The service operates Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, with a break from 1pm to 2pm (and 12.15pm to 2.45pm on Fridays).
There are a few things to take note of when using the MyPhone-In feature:
- The service is for Malaysian citizens only
- You can apply for replacement of a normal MyKad, one that is damaged, or one that has a defective chip
- An application fee applies upon card collection at your selected MyKad Printing and Distribution Centres, with the same processing times as branch applications
- Only the MyKad holder can complete the application and collection of the MyKad. Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians to pick up the MyKad.
- Any changes to address, religion, name, or photo are not allowed
- You must present your old damaged MyKad when collecting your replacement MyKad, or a loss fee will be charged

How much does a replacement for a damaged MyKad cost?
A replacement for a damaged MyKad costs RM10 for citizens and RM40 for non-citizens.
However, ICs damaged within 12 months of the date of issue will be replaced free of charge.
