Switching careers midway can be risky for some, but for many, it's a risk worth taking.

Meet Naqiuddin Rozman.

The 29-year-old left his career as a contract house officer in a hospital in Klang Valley to open his own bakery and wedding cake business called Triad of Batter (TOB).

In an interview with SAYS, Naqiuddin shares that he began selling cakes in 2013 while he was still studying.

But after one and a half years of working as a house officer, the former doctor explains that he was advised to resign due to his worsening health condition.

"After my resignation, I took this opportunity to rebrand my cake business back. I attended a few local and international wedding cake masterclasses in 2019, and explored and experimented with recipes and designs by myself," he adds.

Taking inspiration from abstract paintings, florals, and geometrical art, Naqiuddin focuses on designs using buttercream and fresh flowers

It's not just about making a cake, but it requires you to be skilful at floral arrangements and palette knife painting, he explains.

His most unique request from a customer was this songket emas-inspired cake, which he refers to as a 'floating cake'

He reveals that it was a "two-tier cake with a floating top tier".

For Naqiuddin, baking isn't just a business but a therapeutic process, especially when it comes to making wedding cakes

When asked if he would ever return to the medical industry, he says that there's "definitely no turning back" for him and he's thankful to have family and friends supporting his passion.

"People should normalise career shifts. The more we explore, the more we understand our potential. Identify your inner voice, make conscious efforts, accept failures, and celebrate your success."

His current plan is to renovate his store at Sri Kinta and convert it into bakery and coffee shop, adding that he hopes to be able to turn TOB into a baking academy in 10 years.
