After three years of closure for major renovations, Malaysia's oldest zoo, the Johor Zoo, will officially reopen this National Day, 31 August!

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi made the long-awaited announcement following his recent visit to the zoo.

"The zoo's revitalisation brings with it a fresh experience, complete with upgraded facilities and a new pricing structure," he said, expressing hope that the zoo's rich history and new features will entice locals and foreigners to visit.

The reopening will be officiated by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim on 28 August, three days prior to its public opening.

Opened in 1928 by the late Sultan Sir Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar, the Johor Zoo was originally known as 'Kebun Bintang'

It was the Johor royalty's personal collection of animals before being handed over to the local state government in 1962 and opened to the public.

The renovation marks the zoo's first major upgrade and includes a new entrance and ticketing area, fresh landscaping, upgraded walkways throughout the zoo, a new souvenir centre, a kids' playground, and a larger parking area.

Here's how the 96-year-old zoo looks like now:

It is offering a 50% discount for all Malaysian adults and free entry for all Malaysian children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities (OKU) from 31 August to 30 September.
