A teenage girl in Kemaman, Terengganu, accused of killing her newborn baby boy was charged with murder yesterday, 15 February
According to the 15-year-old girl, the baby was conceived of rape.
Police detained the teenager, whose identity has not been made public to protect her privacy, last Tuesday, 8 February after the newborn baby was found with stab wounds to his chest in a house in Seri Bandi.
Magistrate Tengku Eliana Tuan Kamaruzaman then issued a remand order of seven days against her.
She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code
While the charge of murder carries the death penalty in Malaysia, minors found guilty of capital offences may instead serve a life sentence at the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
According to New Straits Times, deputy public prosecutor Nur Azhani Azman prosecuted the case while lawyer Nuraine Haziqah Shafii represented the teenager.
Magistrate Tengku Eliana did not allow the girl bail and has fixed 16 March for mention.
Nuraine told Reuters that while she sought bail on the grounds that the girl is a minor, female, and ill. However, the court denied the request without giving a reason.
