Anwar Expresses Condolences On The Passing Of Doctor Who Treated His Black Eye In 1998
The prime minister said Datuk Dr Ahmad Shukri Mohamed's good deeds will always be remembered.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences on the passing of Datuk Dr Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, the ophthalmologist who treated his black eye in 1998
In a Facebook post yesterday, 25 December, Anwar said Dr Ahmad Shukri was also one of the witnesses who testified during the Royal Commission of Inquiry into his eye injury, refuting allegations that he had harmed himself while in police custody.
"The services and sincerity of the late Dr Ahmad Shukri will always be remembered," the prime minister wrote.
On 29 September 1998, reporters photographed Anwar with a bruised left eye while he was being escorted into a Kuala Lumpur courthouse to face charges of corruption and sodomy
It was only five months later that then-inspector general of police Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor confessed to slapping, punching, and karate-kicking Anwar, who was blindfolded and handcuffed.
The assault caused Anwar to pass out on the floor while in custody.
The incident marked a dark chapter in Malaysia's political history, fuelling the Reformasi movement.
