China Calls Entry Restrictions Targeting Its Travellers "Unreasonable"

The accuracy of China's COVID-19 mortality data have come under increasing scrutiny, prompting some countries to impose travel curbs.

China's foreign ministry, on Tuesday, 3 January, said some countries' COVID-19 entry restrictions targeting China "lack scientific basis" and "are simply unreasonable"

"We are firmly opposed to attempts to manipulate the epidemic prevention and control measures for political purposes, and will take corresponding measures in different situations according to the principle of reciprocity," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular news briefing in Beijing.

China's abrupt U-turn on COVID-19 controls on 7 December, as well as the accuracy of its case and mortality data, have come under increasing scrutiny at home and abroad and prompted some countries to impose travel curbs.

The US, France, and others will require COVID-19 tests on travellers from China, while Belgium said it would test wastewater from planes for new COVID variants. 

European Union health officials will meet on Wednesday, 4 January, to coordinate a response.
