A Singaporean employer was outraged when he discovered his helper paid a whopping SGD3.50 (about RM11.35) for a plate of plain rice with just some beansprouts

The employer, surnamed Goh, decided to air his displeasure for the rising cost of food when he heard his helper had to pay SGD3.50 for the simple meal, which she purchased from a hawker stall called Thenral Briyani Palace, located at Sixth Avenue, Singapore, on Monday, 5 December.

Upon hearing the price, he went up to the hawker stall and questioned one of the employees operating the stall, to which the employee explained that "all things are expensive now".

Unsatisfied with the answer, Goh posted his experience on a Facebook group, Complaint Singapore, and asked if the group members agreed that the price of the mixed rice was ridiculous as well

Many of them seemed to agree with Goh, as numerous individuals commented that the price was too expensive for the meal.

One netizen even accused the hawker stall of bullying the helper with inflated prices.

However, an employee from the mixed rice stall came forth to explain the reason for the pricing

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the employee said that the helper ordered an à la carte vegetarian meal from them, which would naturally be more expensive as each item would be priced separately.

He said that if the helper had gone with one of the vegetarian set meals, she would have only paid SGD4 (RM13) for two vegetable dishes, curry gravy, and rice.

However, the helper explained that she would not have been able to finish the set meal and opted to go à la carte instead.

The employee also said that he informed the helper of the price she would be paying beforehand, letting her know she would be charged SGD1.50 each for rice and the beansprouts, and an additional SGD0.50 for curry gravy.

The helper reportedly agreed to the pricing, therefore, surprising the employee when he was confronted by Goh.

"Her employer came to the stall to question us about our charges. After explaining our pricing to him, he left. But, we didn't expect him to put up a complaint on Facebook afterwards," he said.
