The victim's father confessed he killed her in a fit of rage after she confessed to marrying a man outside her caste.

In India, 21-year-old Aayushi Chaudhary was shot dead by her father, Nitesh Kumar Yadav, 49, for marrying a man he did not approve of

According to The Indian Express, the victim was a student of Bachelor of Computer Applications at the Delhi Global Institute of Technology. She lived with her family in Badarpur, a town in south east Delhi district.

She was allegedly shot in cold blood by her father, Yadav, using a licensed .32 calibre pistol during an altercation with her parents over her revelation of a secret marriage to a man from another caste.

Aayushi's body was kept in the house for a day, before it was purported that her mother, Brijbala, helped her husband dispose of the body. They wrapped the body in plastic, stuffed it into a red suitcase, and then dumped it along the Yamuna Expressway, near Mathura city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Her body was later discovered by authorities on 18 November.

Two days later, an anonymous source led the police to Badarpur, where the parents of the murdered woman stayed. The two have since been taken into police custody upon suspicion of murder.

Yadav confessed he killed his daughter for the sake of family pride

Police grew suspicious as Aayushi's parents each gave statements that contradicted one another. Eventually, as the interrogation wore on, Yadav broke down and admitted to the crime.

"[Yadav] confessed that he was forced to kill [his daughter] for the sake of family pride [because] she married a man named Chhatrapal Gurjar, [a man] from another caste, without telling her family. It is a case of 'honour killing'," said Raya police station Inspector Om Hari Bajpai, as reported by the Times of India.

Police also stated that during the argument, in a bid to convince her parents to accept her marriage, Aayushi told them she was pregnant. However this backfired, as her father became even more enraged, leading to him pulling out his pistol and shooting her on the spot. Her parents expressed that news of this pregnancy would leave them unable to face friends and relatives.

Bajpai added that the victim had injuries all over her head, face, and body, suggesting she might have been beaten before she was shot twice in the chest by her father.

Yadav and his wife had long been aggrieved with their daughter's "independent style" of living

They were unaware that she had married Gurjar, 24, last year. She spent long periods of time away from home, much to the anger of her father.

Aayushi's father eventually told police he was torn with "deep regret" for killing his daughter, claiming he committed the crime "in a fit of rage".
