A 35-year-old man from Kedah has been arrested for allegedly beating a Rohingya construction worker to death after accusing him of theft

Police found the victim's body wrapped in a bedsheet, placed in a water tub, and covered with soil inside a house in Sungai Petani, reported the New Straits Times.

Kuala Muda police chief ACP Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the victim's wife discovered his remains and called the authorities at 10.30pm on Tuesday, 28 January.

The victim, believed to be in his late 20s, had worked at a construction site and lived with his employer for the past four months

His employer — the prime suspect in the case — had accused the Rohingya man of stealing RM40,150 in cash, a gold necklace, and a nose stud on 4 January.

Despite filing a police report, he allegedly decided to take matters into his own hands.

He held the victim, along with his wife and father — who holds refugee cards under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) — captive for almost a month.

Wan Azharuddin said the suspect and several other Rohingya individuals repeatedly assaulted the victim over the alleged theft

The victim sustained bruises and wounds on his thighs, legs, and back, likely caused by blunt force trauma. His hands and feet were bound, and he had been dead for over 24 hours before police recovered his body.

The victim's body has been sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem.

Wan Azharuddin said a forensic team from the Kedah police headquarters examined the crime scene and found weapons and a rope, which are believed to have been used in the attack.

He has a prior criminal record under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug-related offences.

Authorities also detained six other Rohingya men to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and all the suspects are set to be charged at the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court today, 4 February.
