The KLIA Terminal 1 shooter may have attempted to flee the country to Mecca, Saudi Arabia via the Kelantan-Thailand border

According to Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the 38-year-old suspect, Hafizul Hawari, was planning to hide in Thailand.

This possibility arises from the seizure of foreign currency and other items from the suspect.

Shuhaily said that while the police were unsure of the details of Hafizul's plan to escape, they seized foreign currency, a passport, and falsified IDs when he was arrested yesterday.

"This follows the discovery of a sum of cash in Riyal and Baht currency in the suspect's possession. The suspect also underwent a health check-up at a private hospital [in Kota Bharu]," he told Sinar Daily.

Shuhaily revealed that the suspect was arrested after leaving the private hospital.

The suspect — who injured his estranged wife's bodyguard — had fled to Kelantan in a Honda Civic bearing a fake registration number

"We also found a Glock gun, with one round in the chamber and eight more in its magazine. We also seized a box containing 24 cartridges," Malay Mail quoted Shuhaily as saying.

He also used one of the falsified IDs to book a hotel room in Kota Bharu.

He was remanded for seven days earlier today:
