Police Nab Foreigner For Shooting Fireworks Out Of A Moving Car
The incident, which was captured on video, took place in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
Police have arrested a man linked to an incident on 12 November, during which fireworks were set off from a moving vehicle
The incident was captured on camera, and the video, posted on X, went viral and amassed over 178,000 views within the span of two days.
In the clip, a car can be observed navigating a well-populated urban street at night, with fireworks being launched from an open trunk occupied by a couple of individuals. Two other people can also be seen launching fireworks from the backseat.
While the car moved along the road, numerous fireworks were ignited and launched, with the spark trails flying past the shophouses lining the street and exploding just a short distance away from the tops of the nearby roofs.
On 13 November, police confirmed the arrest of a foreign man suspected of involvement in the incident
According to New Straits Times, Sentul police chief Sukarno Zahari said that the arrest was made after the video went viral. Police officers, acting on information, apprehended the 31-year-old foreigner and seized a silver Proton Waja.
The suspect, who has no prior criminal record, is being remanded at the Sentul police headquarters to assist with the investigation, which will be carried out under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957. If found guilty, he may serve up to seven years in prison, pay a fine of RM10,000, or both.
In Malaysia, the law permits the use of fireworks obtained through licensed distributors, provided that they are used correctly and safely
In the past, the use of pyrotechnics by the general public was forbidden. However, this didn't stop people from illegally purchasing fireworks and setting them off during festive seasons.
In February 2023, the government announced a new policy allowing individuals to purchase and use fireworks, in an attempt to mitigate illegal smuggling.
