The Marang Magistrate's Court today, 30 November, sentenced a man to six months in prison and fined him RM500 for flying the Israeli flag
Magistrate Zur Azureen Zainalkefli stated that the accused, Harma Zulfika Deraman, 30, would receive another jail term of three months if he fails to pay the fine, reported the New Straits Times.
He was charged under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.
He committed the act of hanging and hoisting the Israeli flag at a vehicle accessories shop in Kampung Padang Lebam, Bukit Payung in Marang, Terengganu at 1pm on 19 October.
The act led to public outrage and Harma was soon arrested by the police.
The accused will commence his prison sentence only after completing a separate five-year jail term related to drug offences
He was previously charged under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Magistrate Zur meted out the punishment after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, reported the English daily.
The prosecution was handled by police prosecuting officer ACP Othman Ibrahim, while the accused was represented by the National Legal Aid Foundation.
