A man received the shock of his life when he was told that his plate of mixed rice totalled an eye-watering RM45

The incident was originally posted on social media platform Xiaohongshu by the man's girlfriend, who stated that she took one look at his plate and said it was going to be an expensive meal, reported Sin Chew Daily.

"He didn't believe it," she wrote. "He was shocked when it was time to pay — RM45 for a plate of mixed rice!"

Based on the receipt, the man paid for the exorbitantly priced meal on 29 October 2021. However, the story gained traction after it made its rounds online.

The image she posted showcased a plate of rice with onion omelette (RM3) and pandan leaf chicken (RM4.50), with the priciest dishes on the list being petai prawn (RM10), sotong (RM8), and otak-otak (RM9), which drove up the price tremendously.

While it may seem reasonable after studying the bill, what with the amount and type of dishes he selected, it's still a little shady that petai prawn with no visible prawns can cost RM10, and four pieces of sotong cost RM8.

Veteran mamak-goers chimed in, giving the poor(er) man some advice when it comes to getting the best bang for your buck when ordering nasi campur

The overall consensus was: Do not get seafood!

"As soon as I saw the sotong, I knew it was going to be expensive. When you go out, don't order fish, crab, sotong, and others of the like. Instead, get chicken, eggs, and vegetables. These are the cheapest things on the market now," one user advised.

"When you eat at a mamak, whatever you do, do not get the udang or sotong. Firstly, it won't be fresh. Secondly, even if you order only a little bit, it'll cost you RM10 at least."

"You've got sotong, petai udang, chicken, egg, and otak-otak. What an opulent meal. If you don't know the price of things when ordering, you might as well eat grass," another user remarked sarcastically.
