A man who was shot dead by police on Tuesday, 20 August, during a shootout in Bandar Sunway, is suspected of being a member of a gang linked to dozens of robbery cases, according to Bukit Aman

The gang has been active since 2018 and has caused losses amounting to RM8 million.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police believe the group consists of about 10 members, though the number could vary.

"The group is believed to be active within the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur area.

"We received information from our Kuala Lumpur counterparts, and the case was worked on with Selangor police, while Bukit Aman coordinated the operation.

"During the incident, the suspect was instructed to stop but he refused. He then fired at the police, with two shots hitting a police car," Shuhaily was quoted as saying by Sinar Daily.

Earlier, several videos of the shootout went viral.

In one of the videos making the rounds on social media, a black MPV was seen reversing into two other vehicles as shouts were heard.

Several men wearing balaclavas, believed to be police officers, were heard shouting for the others to take cover before four shots were fired, striking the windshield of a maroon car that was wedged between two others.

In another video, other officers were seen cordoning off the area and rerouting passersby.

Following the shootout, police said they found a revolver at the scene

It is believed that the revolver belonged to the suspect, who had been in the country "for some time".

Meanwhile, explaining about the group's modus operandi, Shuhaily told the media that they would lure unsuspecting victims through offers of online services such as selling jewellery or money changing.

The group would then meet victims at a hotel before transporting them to another location in a vehicle, where other members of the gang would rob the victim, according to Shuhaily.
