The Johor Ministry Of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KDPN) is investigating a food court stall in Johor Bahru after a customer complained about being charged RM1,260 for her family's dinner

The customer, Facebook user Ekin Cahaya, made a post expressing her dissatisfaction with her RM1,260 bill after eating at the seafood restaurant.

"Are there any Johor Bahru people here? I want to ask if the prices at this Tepian Tebrau food court are really like this?" she questioned.

"What's best is that their receipt can't be read at all!" she added sarcastically.

The receipt she posted, dated 30 September, showed that she and her family had ordered 12 items, the names of which are mostly illegible

The dishes varied in price from RM30 to RM224.

The customer also posted a video showing the stall's menu hanging on the wall, whereby most of the seafood items would be calculated "according to market prices".

"We ate a seafood dinner, but what is unreasonable is this RM1,260 total bill and I don't know what they're writing," the customer can be heard saying in the video.

At the time of writing, the video has garnered over 66,000 views, with netizens debating if her meal was overpriced

While many social media users agreed that her meal was expensive, others questioned how many people were eating the meal, which was not stated by the customer.

Her video shows six adults and four children at the table.

"It's scary to see the price on the bill. It's a pity if people who couldn't afford it were charged that. Using the name of a food court, but the prices of a 10-star hotel," commented a Facebook user.

"They ordered four servings of white rice. If I'm not wrong, one serving of white rice is enough for three plates, which is enough for 12 people. The customer must have had a big dinner!" observed another user.

Meanwhile, many said she was charged a usual price for a seafood dinner, especially in Johor Bahru, where prices are often hiked to profit from Singaporean tourists.

"If you come from outstation to Johor Bahru, be sure to survey restaurants and ask around first, because there are many places that charge Singaporean prices. So, if you think it's really expensive, you know they cater mostly to Singaporeans.

"Go to another shop next time. Inshallah, you'll be satisfied," advised another user.

The state KPDN has since dispatched a team to investigate the food court stall

According to The Star, Johor KPDN director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said the stall owner could be issued a compound if they did not display the prices of the food sold.

"It is also a violation if the price displayed differs from the price being charged to the customers," she said.

Lilis added that an investigation will also be conducted on how the price calculation was made by the stall owner, to check for profiteering attempts.

"If the price is too expensive, even with the price displayed, then we will issue a notice under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AKHAP) 2011," she said.
