Perak Govt: No Subsidy For Pork Needed As "It's Not A Staple Food For All Malaysians"

At the state legislative assembly in Ipoh yesterday, 19 July, Razman said that the government did not consider subsidies for pork because the percentage of the meat produced and consumed domestically is not at a critical level.

"For your information, pork is not eaten by all Malaysians and the self-sufficiency level of pork in Perak is at 284%," he said, as quoted by New Straits Times.

"It is not a critical issue and not a national issue compared to chicken, and this is one of the reasons why the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries has taken such action to control the chicken price."

The latter two assemblymen wanted to know if the government would grant subsidies for pork meat following claims of price hikes.

According to Malay Mail, Chong highlighted that the price of pork had increased from RM700 per 100kg to RM1,200 per 100kg in six months.

Meanwhile, according to Lee, between 2009 and 2020, Perak was the largest pork meat producer in the country, so there should be a subsidy introduced to help farmers.

However, Razman said that the government has yet to receive any complaints from consumers or pig farmers in the state about the rise in pork market prices.
