Senior Policeman Charged With Murder After Ramming His Car Into A Student In Ipoh

The police officer had earlier confronted the teenager, who was making loud noises with his motorcycle.

On Friday, 15 December, a senior police officer rammed his car into a motorcycle ridden by a 17-year-old student in Ipoh, Perak, causing the latter's death

According to the New Straits Times, the 44-year-old suspect, Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, was charged with the murder of the teenager at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court today, 18 December.

It is understood that on the day of the incident, the victim, 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, was on his way home from school

However, an altercation ensued between the senior police officer and the teenager when he heard the student revving his throttle and causing a din.

It was reported that the police officer pursued the victim for almost 1km before ramming into him from behind.

Due to the impact, the victim fell and was dragged almost 5m. He died at the scene.

Videos of the incident, showing members of the public attending to the victim lying on the side of the road while the police officer drove away in his Perodua Ativa, went viral on social media.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital indicated that the student died from severe injuries to his chest and abdomen

The senior police officer, who holds the rank of Deputy Superintendent at the Kedah police headquarters, was arrested on the same day of the incident.

Berita Harian reported that 22 witnesses came forward with statements to assist in the investigation.

Mod Nazri was charged this morning with murdering Muhammad Zaharif on Jalan Taman Jati 1 near SMK Jati between 12.05pm and 12.40pm on 15 December

No plea was recorded from the accused, who appeared calm when the charge was read out before Magistrate Punitha Sivaraji.

The court set 7 February next year for case mention, pending chemical reports.

If convicted, Mohd Nazri faces imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years with at least 12 strokes of the cane, or the death penalty.
