Sniffer dogs from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department's K9 unit have been positioned at Wisma Jakel in Shah Alam to determine the cause of the fire that razed the building at 7am on 1 January

According to Bernama, the two English Springer Spaniels, named Rusty and Sam, will focus their efforts on the first floor of the building today, along with 50 personnel from the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station.

Rusty and Sam are trained specifically to investigate fires and are usually involved when there are elements of arson.

"The dogs have their own task each time they are called to assist in the investigation. They come in pairs. One will find the cause while the other will confirm the finding," Investigation Division assistant director Norizham Mohd Nurdin told reporters.

The five-storey textile and garment building was believed to have suffered an estimated loss of RM100 million

Jakel Group managing director Seri Mohamed Faroz Mohamed Jakel said that the estimated loss only accounted for the damaged building and that the actual loss has yet to be determined.

The cause of the fire was believed to be a short circuit, but authorities have urged the public to refrain from making unfounded speculations before investigations are concluded.

No casualties have been reported.
