KLCC, Sunway Pyramid, And More Cancel New Year's Eve Fireworks "In Solidarity As A Nation"
The move follows the government's decision to cancel the national year-end fireworks display at Dataran Merdeka.
In light of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent decision to cancel New Year's Eve fireworks at Dataran Merdeka, malls around the Klang Valley have followed suit
The first to announce the move was KLCC The Place last Saturday, 24 December. A post on its Instagram page said it will be "ushering in 2023 a little differently this year."
"KLCC The Place stands in solidarity with our fellow Malaysians who are currently experiencing challenging times with the ongoing natural disasters, the flood, and other difficulties," the post read.
Its management has also decided not to move forward with any performances or fireworks, but will keep the KLCC Park and Lake Symphony Fountains illuminated.
Yesterday, 30 December, Sunway Pyramid also opted to cancel its New Year's Eve countdown fireworks
A post on Sunway Pyramid's Facebook page announced that the year-end fireworks at Sunway City Kuala Lumpur and the countdown party at Sunway Velocity will be cancelled to respect the flood victims.
"Let's come together in solidarity as a nation during this time as we remember the lives lost in recent tragedies," the post read.
The fireworks display at Sunway City Ipoh has also been cancelled.
However, other year-end activities, including Sunway malls' extended operating hours, festive set menus, and the Grand Wave concert, will proceed as scheduled.
Other places in the Klang Valley that have called off their year-end fireworks displays include the i-City theme park and Eco Grandeur's new year countdown event at Trex Bike Park.
Meanwhile, activities to ring in the new year that do not involve fireworks will continue as planned.
