Back in 2013, the iconic doge meme stole the hearts of millions and quickly became a quintessential image in meme history.

Unfortunately, the face behind the meme, Shiba Inu Kabosu, has been diagnosed with acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma leukaemia on Wednesday, 28 December.

According to the official Instagram of the quirky Shiba Inu, Kabosu is currently 17 years old and is living with her owner, Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher, in Sakura, Japan.

Sato said that the canine hadn't been eating or drinking normally since Christmas Eve and had to be taken to a veterinary hospital.

Kabosu's owner also described her condition as "very dangerous" and the Shiba Inu had developed jaundice in the liver. She will have to be on antibiotics in order to control the disease.

Thankfully, in more recent updates, Kabosu seemed to be eating and drinking again and can be seen tucking into some treats and water.

Kabosu's health condition has touched the hearts of her fans and many have poured in their well-wishes for the canine's recovery

Kabosu revolutionised the meme culture on the Internet when netizens fell in love with the worrisome, judgmental, and confused look of the Shiba Inu

Due to the funny and awkward face of Kabosu in the picture, netizens have dubbed it as 'doge meme', intentionally misspelling the word 'dog' as 'doge'.

Ever since the photo gained its popularity, many Internet users have made the photo into a meme, usually accompanied by grammatically incorrect texts in Comic Sans font, such as, "much wow", "very scare", or "such swag."

The doge meme became so iconic on the Internet that Kabuso's face began appearing all over social media platforms, merchandise, and even managed to make its way into the cryptocurrency sphere, where 'Dogecoin' was born.

A non-fungible token (NFT) of the doge meme was also created and sold for USD4 million (RM17,590,000), the highest amount ever paid for a meme NFT.

Safe to say, Kabuso made a huge impact on the Internet, even to this day.
