A teacher has shared a heartwarming story of his Standard One students helping their classmate with special needs navigate daily life at school in Kapit, Sarawak
The teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Kapit, Sylvester Ronny Pulene, shared on Facebook that he is always proud of seeing the students at the primary school help out their classmate named 'J'.
"This is the meaning of friendship," he started in a Facebook post on Wednesday, 17 August.

The teacher said he was heading to class after break time when he saw the three students hanging around the toilet and watched as a student helped J take off his belt
"This student, J, is indeed special. He was my former student in kindergarten and still doesn't know how to take care of himself. Even in Standard One, he still uses diapers. His speech is also not very clear and a bit slow," explained the teacher.
So, he was very happy to see that J's friends were helping him.
"Maybe he wasn't wearing diapers today... But what makes me proud is that he has many friends in the class who care enough about him."

Sylvester elaborated that J's friends also often help him line up for food at the canteen so that he doesn't have to
The teacher said that the student is a recipient of the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT) at school.
"J is also very friendly even though he is different from the other students. In short, his classmates still look after him even though they are all only seven years old," he said.
Sharing photos of the touching moment, Sylvester said he also watched as the students helped fasten J's belt and tuck his shirt back in after using the toilet, then they all held hands and walked back to class.
In less than 24 hours, the Facebook post received well over 15,000 likes and 1,200 comments by netizens who were touched by the friendship
"I'm so touched and proud to read about these kind children who are so willing to help their friend with special needs," said a Facebook user.

Another said, "This behaviour must have started at home. Maybe [the friend] is good at taking care of his younger siblings and helping his family so he felt responsible to help his classmate. Well done."
