American political commentator Tucker Carlson recently came under fire for inaccurately referring to US presidential candidate Kamala Harris as "Samoan-Malaysian"

Carlson, a former Fox News host, made disparaging remarks about Harris on Wednesday, 27 October, during Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally in New York City.

"It's gonna be pretty hard for Democrats to look at us and say, 'You know what? Kamala Harris, she got 85 million votes because she's just so impressive'," Carson said at the rally.

"As the first Samoan-Malaysian, low-IQ former California prosecutor ever to be elected president."

Born to an Indian mother and a black Jamaican father, Harris is "the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American" to be elected as US vice-president, as stated in her White House biography.

Carlson's comments drew criticism from several Malaysian public figures

US-based Malaysian comedian and actor Ronny Chieng called out Carlson during a segment on Comedy Central's The Daily Show, where Chieng is a senior correspondent.

"Big mistake buddy. I'm Malaysian and The Rock is Samoan," Chieng quipped. "That's right. Now, you're insulting two of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Get ready for the backlash, baby."

Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan took a jab at Carlson in a Facebook post on Wednesday, 30 November.

"We were not aware that a Malaysian was running for the office of the US President," he wrote. "Should Puan Kamala win the race, we are delighted to invite her to balik kampung (return to hometown) and try some nasi goreng (fried rice) USA."

Meanwhile, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok felt that Carlson's comments were demeaning, adding that he should retract his remarks and apologise.

"In the accusation against Harris, he [is] also demeaning Malaysia, which is plunged in the conflict between two parties in the United States. He should withdraw his statement and apologise to Malaysia.

"I'm annoyed that Republican US political commentator Tucker Carlson is using nationality and gender to attack Kamala, and drag Malaysia into his rhetoric," Kok said in a Facebook post on 30 October.
