Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will be collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to donate RM1 for every Harimau Malaya match ticket sold, to be put towards the conservation of the Malayan tiger

In a joint statement released by the ministry on their Facebook page, it said the effort is in support of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (NRECC), which spearheads the path to biodiversity conservation.

"On 21 March, the FAM executive committee has agreed to donate RM1 for every match ticket sold, involving the national team, and will channel the donations to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for this purpose," said FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.

"This is a mission for FAM and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the conservation of Malayan tigers. Every time we play and watch football, we will be supporting the life of every Malayan tiger in Malaysia," he added.

Minister Hannah Yeoh has also shown her support towards the cause

In line with the Malaysia MADANI core value of sustainability, Hannah urged all football fans to display the same amount of care towards the conservation of these tigers, as they would to the sport.

"Harimau Malaya is a symbol and the sacred name for Malaysia's national football team. Let there not come a day when tigers become a mere mascot or a slogan, without any roaming our forests," she said in a statement.

"If this species does become extinct, the country's sustainability spirit will fade, and the football team's name will no longer carry any meaning. The Ministry of Youth and Sports will be helping in this noble effort through the Rakan Muda programme," she continued.

According to the statement, the tiger population in Malaysia has immensely decreased over the years, going from 1,000 tigers in the 1970s' to only 150 tigers today

"Tigers are an important indicator for biodiversity, and the protection of the species in our local forests will maintain the harmony of a stable ecosystem that will also support human existence as well.

"It's time for conservation efforts to be supported by all parties, and therefore the Ministry of Youth and Sports and FAM have taken a step in helping these animals," read the two organisations' joint statement.
