BYD Becomes Best-Selling EV Brand In Malaysia After Selling Over 10,000 Cars
It took the brand less than two years to go to the top.
BYD is now the largest electric vehicle (EV) seller in Malaysia after selling more than 10,000 EVs
The Chinese EV powerhouse first entered the Malaysian market with the BYD Atto 3 in December 2022, and in less than two years, the brand has surged to become the country's top-selling EV brand.
To celebrate, Sime Darby Motors hosted an exclusive convoy drive for BYD owners, taking them on a road trip from Ara Damansara to Melaka.
The event, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, saw 60 BYD EVs rolling out in style for the two-day excursion, according to a report by SoyaCincau.

BYD Malaysia Managing Director Eagle Zhao noted that this milestone wouldn't have been possible without the trust and loyalty of BYD's growing customer base
"This milestone reflects the trust and support of our customers who embrace the future of mobility with BYD. It's been an incredible journey with Sime Darby Motors and we look forward to elevating sustainable driving experiences in Malaysia," Zhao said.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors Southeast Asia, lauded the achievement as a reflection of the growing acceptance of EVs across the region.
According to official data from the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ), BYD has already registered 10,106 EVs from its debut through to August 2024 with the BYD Seal, Atto 3, and Dolphin models leading the charge
Sime Darby Motors isn't slowing down either. With 26 showrooms nationwide and plans to expand to 30 by the end of 2024, the company aims to keep the momentum going.
BYD is expected to hit its next 10,000 sales in even less time, thanks to continued innovations and an expanding EV lineup.
And if you're waiting for BYD's next big release, keep an eye out for the BYD M6 — an all-electric MPV with a range of up to 530km, set to arrive in Malaysia soon.
