YouTube Shorts is making a big change that's a long time coming. Pun intended.

In a blog announcement posted on 3 October, YouTube revealed that from 15 October onwards, creators will be able to upload Shorts that are up to three minutes long — triple the previous 60-second limit.

YouTube said that this was a top feature requested by creators, to give them the flexibility to tell their stories.

"This change applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio and won't affect any videos you uploaded before 15 October. And we'll be working to improve recommendations for longer Shorts in the coming months," YouTube promised.

YouTube is also rolling out several new features aimed at enhancing the experience for creators and users alike

One of the most exciting additions is a dedicated Shorts trends page for mobile users, making it easier to stay on top of what's buzzing in the Shorts community.

The Shorts player is also getting a facelift, with new templates that allow creators to jump on the latest trends and pair clips with popular sounds.

In what might be the biggest creative boost, YouTube is introducing a "Remix" function, which lets creators add their own flair to trending content. And if you're someone who prefers browsing, YouTube's new comment preview feature means you can see highlights from comments directly in the feed without needing to click through.

These updates come hot on the heels of a recent announcement that YouTube will integrate Google DeepMind's Veo AI video model into Shorts later this year

This AI tool will allow creators to change their video backgrounds or publish stand-alone video clips using generative AI, adding even more creative freedom.

And for those who find their feed swamped with Shorts? YouTube is giving users more control over their content with a new "Show Fewer Shorts" option.

The updates signal a clear escalation in the ongoing battle between YouTube and TikTok, which has recently embraced longer-form content, allowing users to post videos up to 10 minutes long. YouTube's latest push shows it's betting big on keeping creators and users engaged with short-form content — now, just a little longer.
