'The Princess Diaries 3' Confirmed: Malaysian Director Adele Lim Set To Direct
Queen of Genovia is back!
After an initial announcement in November 2022, a third Princess Diaries movie has been confirmed by actress Anne Hathaway on her social media accounts
The actress posted a cheeky announcement on Saturday, 5 October, featuring clips of her and Julie Andrews' iconic delivery of the line "Shut up!".
"Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with Adele Lim, Disney, and Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues," Hathaway captioned.
Hathaway will produce the movie under her production company Somewhere Pictures.
Malaysian filmmaker Adele Lim, who wrote the screenplay of Crazy Rich Asians and directed the Asian-led comedy Joy Ride, is set to direct the upcoming sequel.
"As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim told Variety. "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide."
The third movie will not be a reboot of the series; instead, it is expected to continue Mia's story in The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement.
It's unclear if the rest of the original cast will return for the sequel, but most of them have expressed interest in reprising their roles
Mandy Moore, who played Mia's bully in school from the first film, is "game for returning".
"I would love to join those ladies (Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews) anytime, but I also understand if there's no room for my awful character," she said.
Sandra Oh, who appeared in a brief but memorable role as vice principal Gupta is "ready for the queen". "I'm dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world."
Heather Matarazzo and Hector Elizondo, who played Mia's best friend Lilly Moscovitz and personal guard Joe, respectively, have also expressed interest in returning for the third movie.
Since Hathaway's announcement, many fans have been looking forward to news of dashing Nicholas Deveraux's return in the sequel, played by Chris Pine.
"I love Anne. I think she's great. I'll wait for that call," the actor said in a recent interview in May.
Meanwhile, Julie Andrews may not be coming back as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. T_T
"I might just be a little bit too old a granny for it. I don't know, it depends what the story is," she said.
However, Hathaway remained steadfast in bringing Andrews back.
"If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we could make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."
