PlayStation To Lay Off 900 Staff Involved In 3 Hugely Popular Video Games
The layoffs underscore the ongoing challenges in the tech and gaming industries.
PlayStation is set to lay off around 900 employees
That's roughly 8% of Sony Interactive Entertainment's (SIE) workforce.
The decision, announced by SIE chief executive officer Jim Ryan in a blog post on 27 February 2024, is part of strategic changes aimed at long-term growth and improving community experiences.
"After careful consideration and many leadership discussions over several months, it has become clear changes need to be made to continue to grow the business and develop the company," he wrote.
"We had to step back, look at our business holistically, and move forward focusing on the long-term sustainability of the company and delivering the best experiences possible for our community," Ryan added.
The layoffs will impact global operations, including major studios like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games
Naughty Dog is the developer of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us, while Insomniac Games developed Marvel's Spider-Man.
Meanwhile, SIE is considering layoffs at three international studios.
Those include Horizon series developer Guerrilla Games, SingStar developer London Studio, and Horizon Call of the Mountain co-developer Firesprite.
The move has certainly drawn criticism and the layoffs highlight the ongoing challenges in the tech and gaming industries.
