According to New Straits Times, the Ministry of Transport is initiating this move to make EVs more competitive in the automotive market, and lower the barrier for Malaysians to buy them.
As of now, the tax structure for EVs is much higher than that of gasoline cars, as reported by FMT.
The review of tax rates of EVs is also timely, as the current EV tax exemption will come to a close on 2025, which is just two years away.
Aside from that, the special EV number plates will begin with 'EV' followed by their registered number

Loke emphasised that the ministry is also looking to ensure the safety of EV management in terms of accident handling and implementing safety measures as well as promoting the growth of EV adoption in Malaysia more closely.
