7 Details In The New 'Barbie' Movie Trailer That Make Us Wanna Watch It Even More
Life in plastic, it's fantastic!
The second Barbie (2023) movie trailer just dropped and it looks fantastic
Starring Margot Robbie as the beloved doll and Ryan Gosling as the 'main' Ken, Barbie (2023) has a star-studded cast where everyone either plays a special Barbie, or just another Ken.
(There's only one Allan, though, and he's played by Michael Cera.)
Warner Bros. Studios released the second teaser trailer for the much anticipated movie on 5 April, and it looks absolutely spectacular. From the popping colours to all the different Barbies and Kens, there were far too many things that we love about the movie just by watching the minute-long clip.
In fact, here are seven exciting details from the new trailer that we can't wait to see on the big screen:
1. The shape of Barbie Land
Just look at it.
It's basically just a long street that spells out "Barbie Land" inside of a heart-shaped bubble, and everything is pink.
It truly is a Barbie world, and we wish we were living in it.
2. The iconic arched 'fashion feet'
This has to be one of our favourite details from the trailer. The 'main' Barbie, and possibly all the other Barbies in the movie, have the iconic 'fashion feet' like on the actual doll.
This shot in the trailer got everyone on Twitter excited and praising the movie for its attention to detail.
With the actual doll, Barbie shoes are designed to fit the arched feet. Even flat Barbie shoes had a wedge inside so the doll could still wear them in style.
3. Barbie's big plastic hairbrush
If you grew up playing with Barbie dolls as a child, you would remember the incredible number of accessories our girls have. Normally, Barbie dolls would be packaged with a plastic hair brush so you could take care of their golden locks and keep them looking fabulous.
The Barbie movie pays homage to that, too.
Live action Barbie uses a plastic hair brush that looks like the ones sold with toy Barbie. The brush is even bigger than her hand!
4. Ken's yellow rollerblades
Another example of the movie props taking after real life Barbie doll accessories: Ken's bright yellow rollerblades. Even in the movie, it looks like the toy itself!
The rollerblades are modelled after the Hot Skatin' Barbie skates from 1994. In previous pictures of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling on set, they were seen wearing costumes akin to the limited edition doll.
5. The diversity of all the Barbies, including one with a prosthetic arm
Barbie is everything. She literally is.
The teaser posters for the movie show all the Barbies as different kinds of women. There's a barbie who's a Nobel Prize winner, a Barbie who is president, a Barbie who is a mermaid, just to name a few. What really sells the 'Barbie is everything' message is the diversity in their physiques as well.
There are Barbies in all skin tones, shapes, sizes, and body types. In the shot above, you can see there's a Barbie with a prosthetic arm.
There are actual Barbie dolls that have various disabilities and health conditions, and they were released back in 2019 to offer kids a more diverse representation of beauty, as reported by CNN.
6. Barbie Land's version of the Statue of Liberty
You might miss it if you don't look really close, but Barbie Land has their own Lady Liberty, and of course, it's pink.
Throughout the trailer, you might even catch other iconic landmarks that have been 'Barbie-fied'. For instance, Los Angeles International Airport, popularly known as LAX, has its Barbie-version in the movie as BAX.
Some people have even pointed out details that are homages to the old animated Barbie movies, like Barbie and The Magic of Pegasus (2005) and Barbie: A Fairy Secret (2011).
7. The return of the one and only, Allan, and the "controversial" Midge
Very few people remember who Allan and Midge are. If you watched Barbie: Life In The Dreamhouse, you've probably seen them as side characters.
But did you know they were actual dolls?
Allan and Midge dolls were first released in the 60s and were marketed as Barbie and Ken's best friends. Allan was supposed to be able to 'fit in all of Ken's clothes', whereas Midge was supposed to be the 'safer' version of Barbie.
Unfortunately, sales for both dolls were discontinued shortly after they were released. Midge dolls were reintroduced in the 80s, and then again in 2002 with the controversial 'removable baby bump' (with an actual baby inside). That didn't sit well with retailers and parents, as it was seen to promote teen pregnancy to little girls. After that, Midge was taken off shelves for good and only manufactured for doll-collecting purposes.
So its nice to see these 'forgotten' Barbie-verse characters back in the scene, wearing their original clothes no less.
