Get To Know The Entertaining Trio Behind Fly FM's Weekday Show 'The JoKeRs In The Morning'
They provide that good-friends-just-hanging-out vibe.
Malaysians who tune in to Fly FM every weekday morning from 6am to 10am should be familiar with the cheery voices of Juanita, Kavin Jay, and Ryan Howlette
The way you start your morning can help set the tone for how the rest of your day goes, which is why the trio aims to radiate positive energy and spread laughter whenever they go on air every Monday to Friday.
But have you ever wondered how their weekday show, The JoKeRs in the Morning, came to be?
Together, Juanita, Kavin, and Ryan make up The JoKeRs, a moniker that gives listeners a glimpse of what they can expect, besides, of course, being a nod to the hosts' initials
Juanita was already a breakfast show producer before having her voice pervade the airwaves, while some may be familiar with her fellow Malaysian co-host, Kavin, who made a name for himself as an established comedian.
Ryan, on the other hand, had an online following and presence, where he shared his viewpoint as a mat salleh residing in the country.
With their diverse background, they each bring a unique quality to Fly FM's The JoKeRs in the Morning.
They all have an equally different story to tell when it comes to how they found their entry into the world of radio too.
For Juanita, it only seemed natural for her path to lead to where she is today, as being a radio personality has been her ambition since she was 16.
"I was listening to Fly FM as my radio station. It was Jules at the time. And I remember listening to her and I thought, 'how cool would it be to do a job where you're encouraged to be yourself?'," Juanita said.
A former Miss Universe Malaysia contestant, she has now been in the industry for 11 years, and describes radio as her first love.
The same cannot be said for Kavin and Ryan though. The former grew up wanting to become a pilot, but caught the bug for radio after working in the industry, while the latter had thoughts of being a radio DJ but never really banked on pursuing it as a career.
"In the last five years, I've just sort of fallen into opportunities or opportunities have come to me. So, I think I just kind of look at it now as an amazing opportunity, but definitely not what I was expecting at all," Ryan reflected.
The first day of any job can already be a daunting experience, but the reality of putting yourself out there to the nation certainly adds an extra bit of pressure
Kavin's first taste of radio came as a two-hour slot at two in the morning. He said, "At first I was trying to be – because it was a very prim and proper station – prim and proper a little bit."
By the second hour, Kavin let his personality shine through. "I kind of let loose, and I just had fun," he shared.
Ryan chimed in on the topic, noting there has been a definite learning curve for him as a radio announcer. He mentioned, "I was going from a place of making content where you can see exactly who is seeing you and commenting on it directly right away to radio when you say something and you have no idea how it's been received. Absolutely no idea."
According to the trio, the thing that makes The JoKeRs special is that they provide a good-friends-just-hanging-out vibe
The goal is to entertain listeners, and it works partly due to the on-air chemistry between Juanita, Kavin, and Ryan.
Kavin shared that it is the genuinity of their interactions that puts them in a class of their own, saying, "Individually, I think we are funny as people and we bring that together naturally. That sense of comedic experience actually comes across very, very well."
His co-hosts echo the same sentiment, with Ryan acknowledging that their unique backgrounds add a fun mix, and Juanita thanking their entire team.
As Juanita put it, "We have really good people working with us, building the show, boosting our show, giving us as much as they possibly can to be able to entertain people in the morning, and we are putting our heart and our soul into this and ourselves into the show, so of course, we really want people to listen and to be entertained."
