Good news, we will be seeing more Malaysians on the big screen, as Michelle Yeoh and Aaron Teoh, are set to join the star-studded cast of Wicked

The two-part feature adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who directed Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Now You See Me 2 (2016). In an exclusive report from Variety, it is confirmed that Michelle Yeoh, the Everything Everywhere All At Once star, will be casted as Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University.

Meanwhile, Teoh will be playing the character of Avaric, a friend of Glenda and a frenemy of Elphaba, according to The Star. The London-based Broadway actor worked as a vocal teacher in Malaysia for nine years and appeared in local productions like Tick Tick Boom (2015) before moving to Britain and participating in the theatre scene there.

Wicked follows the origin stories of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West while Glinda became the Good Witch

The films will take place before the events of The Wizard of Oz, and will feature the never-before-seen origin stories of the witches of Oz on cinema screens. The screenplay will be based on the award-winning Broadway musical, which took from the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

The movie will be divided into two parts, and are to be released on Christmas in 2024 and 2025, respectively

The two-part feature has also announced the casting of Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.

"We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but two. With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told, while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters," director Chu said, as reported by Variety.
