Michelle Yeoh has won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role
On Sunday, 12 March, Michelle Yeoh made history at the Academy Awards, as she won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, making her the first Malaysian and the first Asian to win in the category.
Besting her other nominees, which included Ana de Armas in Blonde (2022), Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans (2022), Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie (2022), and the person who was deemed her biggest competition throughout the 2023 award season, Cate Blanchett in Tár (2022), Yeoh took home the prize for one of the most talked-about films of 2022, Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
Overall, the film, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, also took home awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Film Editing, Best Directing, and Best Picture, among others.
"This is history in the making!" Yeoh said during her acceptance speech
"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams — dream big — and dreams, do come true. And ladies, don't let anybody tell you, you are ever past your prime," Yeoh said in the opening of her acceptance speech.
Thanking her cast and crew members, Yeoh also praised the directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, while accepting her award. Dedicating the award to her mother, Yeoh called all mothers superheroes.
"She's watching right now in Malaysia, KL with my family, and friends, I love you guys, I'm bringing this home to you," she continued. Yeoh also thanked her extended family in Hong Kong for giving her opportunities along the way that lead to her Oscar win.
Ending her acceptance speech, Yeoh also thanked the organisers of the awards ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
"This is history in the making!" Yeoh said in conclusion.
