Pokémon Voice Actress Rachael Lillis Dies At 46 After Battle With Breast Cancer
Lillis voiced Misty, Jessie, and even Jigglypuff in the English version of the beloved 1990s animated TV series.
Rachael Lillis, who voiced popular characters Misty and Jessie in the English versions of the beloved Pokémon animated TV series, films, and video games, has died from breast cancer at the age of 46
Her death was confirmed by her sister, Laurie Orr, on a GoFundMe page created earlier this year to raise funds for the US voice actress's medical bills.
"With a heavy heart, I regret to say that Rachael has passed away. She passed peacefully Saturday night, without pain, and for that we are grateful," wrote Orr in an update on Monday, 12 August.
"The picture posted reflects her work over the years. Many of you have expressed an appreciation of her work, so I wanted to post a picture with many of the characters," she said.
Her sister added that before her death, Lillis was moved by the overwhelming response the fundraiser received from fans
"She likened the response to this fund to the movie, It's A Wonderful Life, when George is surprised to learn just how much he is loved by his friends, and how much they do care!
"She was moved to tears when seeing the GoFundMe page with your comments and kind thoughts," wrote Orr.
She added that the funds will go to any remaining medical bills and a memorial service for Lillis, as well as causes to combat cancer in her name.
Lillis's Pokémon co-star Veronica Taylor, who voiced protagonist Ash Ketchum, also paid tribute to her on social media
"Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice, whether speaking or singing. She will be forever remembered for the many animated roles she played," Taylor wrote on Instagram.
"Rachael was so thankful for all the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled cancer. It truly made a positive difference," she added.
Besides Misty and Jessie, Lillis also lent her voice to many Pokémon, including the fan-favourite Jigglypuff, known for always singing its enemies (and friends) to sleep.
Lillis also portrayed regular characters in a number of anime series, including Your Lie In April, Hunter x Hunter, and Winx Club.
According to IMDB, her voice appeared on 423 episodes of Pokémon between 1997 and 2015.
