Studio Ghibli Clinches 2nd Oscar For Best Animated Feature With 'The Boy And The Heron'
After two decades, Hayao Miyazaki has finally won his second Oscar.
Studio Ghibli has clinched its second Oscars award with The Boy And The Heron after its first win in 2003 with Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and the mastermind behind many of the studio's films, won the Best Animated Feature Film with his latest work at 83 years old, reported AFP.
The Boy and the Heron beat Disney's Elemental and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse this year.
Miyazaki was not present during the Oscars ceremony in the US yesterday, 10 March. His team from Studio Ghibli received the award on his behalf.
The Best Animated Feature Film category was introduced in 2002, with Shrek winning the award that year. Spirited Away became the second animated film to win the accolade the following year.
Miyazaki's latest win at the Oscars last night came two decades after his first win, commemorating his lifelong work that began as early as 1963 when he joined Tōei Animation.
While promoting the film last year, Miyazaki said The Boy and the Heron took about a decade to make, as the animation was hand-drawn.
The animated film follows Mahito, a young 12-year-old boy, who struggles to settle in a new town after his mother's death. When a talking heron informs Mahito that his mother is still alive, he enters an abandoned tower in search of her, transporting him to another world.
